The SunSmart Handmade Bamboo Case for the Galaxy S5 is a decently high quality cover that’s actually made from real bamboo. While this definitely sounds very exquisite, and it is, there are a few precautions that need to be taken with this one.
In a world dominated by polycarbonate, silicon, and TPU, companies are trying to “branch” out into some different spaces with the materials they choose for their cases. Bamboo is becoming a popular alternative because of its strength and relatively low cost.
SunSmart has designed several different wooden cases that make use of bamboo, and they’ve got them in several different shades of brown with different designs on the backs too.
The cases come together via two halves: one for the bottom and one for the top. They click together and there’s basically a rail system inside that your Galaxy S5 slides in between to keep the case solid and firm against your device.
SunSmart warns that these cases aren’t as resilient as your traditional polycarbonate hard case, so avoid abusing it too much and avoid leaving it out in the sun because there’s no type of protective UV coating.
Since the case is wood, it should not interfere with any sort of signal or radio frequencies. Its thickness is borderline to the point that it may interfere with your wireless Qi charging if you have a receiver installed.
If you drop your Galaxy S5 while in the Handmade Bamboo Case, it should be decently protected from any sort of damage. The material itself is a little more resilient to impact than polycarbonate because it’s slightly more malleable, but it’s actually possible to crack the case from a high enough drop.
There’s no included screen protector so your screen is going to be completely exposed, but the case does protrude out on the front lip like most do to create a clearance.
Adds very minimal bulk
Made from real bamboo
Is not very durable
This case is definitely somewhat of a luxury item, and really shouldn’t be selected as a rugged item. It’ll definitely protect your phone a little bit, but getting this case is more about the look and style and not the durability. If you’re aware of how much you’ll have to take care of it, it’s a good buy. And that’s not saying you have to go out of your way to baby it, it’s just not as durable as a traditional cheap plastic or gel case!
